About Tony Fruscella A mellow, lyrical cool jazz trumpeter in the vein of Chet Baker, Tony Fruscella unfortunately lived a similarly addictive lifestyle that led to a tragically premature death. Fruscella was born in Orangeburg, NY, on February 4, , and gained his first important experience playing in an Army band.

The lasting testament of trumpeter Tony Fruscella – a great talent whose powers only flourished briefly on vinyl, and never so brightly as on this LP! The set's a well-composed one – gently grooving numbers arranged and written by Phil Sunkel, played by Tony and a group that includes Allen Eager on tenor sax. Eager's another talent who's not always represented as strongly as he.

Sep 27,  · The tenor playing really reminds me of the maligned Paul Quinchette whilst Fruscella's trumpet is like a less-wan version of Chet Baker. I quite like the music on Jazzrook's link which seems to fit in to the niche between the intense be-bop of the late 's and the rather more conservative styles which became popular in the early 's when some aspects of the music seemed to take the foot.
